Executive Summary

Raw Stadia is a hardware-enabled SaaS company: it turns data about grass sports pitches into performance and grounds-management intelligence, and its Raw Performance offering helps coaches and performance staff choose the right surface for every training session. That intelligence is only as good as the hardware capturing the data underneath it.

Rather than build an in-house hardware and manufacturing capability, Raw Stadia partnered with Voxdale to own that layer end to end. Voxdale designed, engineered and manufactured the complete hardware product range: functionalities and requirements, concept design and product architecture, mechanical and electronics design, firmware and connectivity, design for manufacturing, sourcing, assembly, validation, calibration and batch production.

The hardest part was not a single technical hurdle but sustaining quality and reliability on tight, shifting budgets while managing the full end-to-end complexity across both the client and supplier sides. Voxdale's answer was a modular electronics design, reused across product variants, which kept the range coherent and cost-effective as requirements evolved.

The partnership continues today, with Voxdale as Raw Stadia's established one-stop shop for hardware.

Executive Summary

Client Context

Rawstadia (Raw Stadia) is a hardware-enabled SaaS company in sports tech.

It provides data about grass pitches — surface-performance metrics and grounds-management information — and its Raw Performance product helps coaches and performance staff choose the right surface for every session, turning surface data into confident, high-impact training decisions.

Because Raw Stadia's value is delivered through software and data, its physical measurement hardware has to be dependable, manufacturable and consistent enough that the numbers it produces can be trusted. That requirement — reliable hardware behind a data product — is what brought Raw Stadia to Voxdale.

Rather than build an internal hardware and manufacturing team, Raw Stadia chose to partner with Voxdale for that entire layer. Over the years, Voxdale has become Raw Stadia's one-stop shop for hardware and a trusted partner.

The Technical Brief

  • Design, engineer and manufacture the complete hardware product range that captures the surface data behind the Raw Stadia platform

  • Take products from functionalities and requirements through concept, architecture, mechanical and electronics design, firmware and connectivity

  • Make the range manufacturable (design for manufacturing) and put it into batch production across multiple designs

  • Handle sourcing and supply chain, assembly, validation and calibration

  • Keep improving the products over time through continuous improvement

  • Deliver quality and reliability across the whole range

The Technical Brief

The Technical Brief

The Harder, Less Obvious Part

The brief carried a set of constraints that pulled against each other and could not be solved one at a time:

  1. A moving target on a tight budget. Client demands, market demands and budgets all changed over time, and budgets were often tight — so the engineering had to stay flexible and cost-disciplined without sacrificing quality or reliability.

  2. End-to-end multidisciplinary coordination. One team had to own mechanical, electronics, firmware and connectivity, manufacturing, sourcing, calibration and logistics simultaneously — on both the client and supplier sides.

  3. A large volume of data to manage. BOMs, lead times, suppliers, CAD, drawings, order lists, budgets and capacity planning all had to be controlled from both a design and a production point of view, across standard parts, made-to-order parts, quality assurance and calibration.

  4. A product range, not a single product. Multiple designs had to stay coherent and cost-effective, which pushed the team toward reuse across variants rather than one-off engineering.

What Voxdale Delivered

Voxdale engineered five generations of the C2K device in direct co-development with ITM's clinical research team.

Functionalities and requirements drafting. Voxdale defined what each product had to do and the requirements it had to meet, establishing the functional basis for the whole range.

Concept design and product architecture. Voxdale developed the product concepts and the architecture — how the mechanical, electronic and firmware elements are structured and fit together across the range.

Mechanical design. Full mechanical design of the hardware, including the enclosures and structures that make the devices usable and durable in a grass-pitch, outdoor sports environment.

Electronics design. Design of the electronics for the product range, built on a modular setup that made the electronics reusable across the different product designs — a deliberate choice that kept the range coherent and cost-effective.

Firmware design and connectivity. Development of the device firmware and the connectivity that gets surface data off the hardware and into the Raw Stadia platform.

Design for manufacturing. The products were engineered to be manufacturable, so designs could move cleanly into repeatable production.

Sourcing and supply chain. Voxdale handled sourcing and supply chain for the range, spanning standard parts and made-to-order parts, with supplier and lead-time management.

Assembly, validation and calibration. Voxdale assembled the products and put them through validation and calibration so the data they capture can be trusted.

Batch production of the different designs. The range was taken into batch production across its multiple designs, in Voxdale's own production facilities.

Continuous improvement. Beyond initial delivery, Voxdale kept improving the products over time as demands and the market evolved.

Data and program management. Underpinning all of the above, Voxdale managed a substantial amount of data and logistics — BOMs, lead times, suppliers, CAD, drawings, order lists, budgets and capacity planning — from both a design and a production point of view, including quality assurance and calibration follow-up.

How We Worked

The work was done in close collaboration with the Raw Stadia team, inside Voxdale's own prototyping workshop and production facilities.

  • Account management and product direction — Bart, keeping Raw Stadia's requirements and priorities aligned as the project evolved

  • A multidisciplinary engineering team spanning mechanical, electronics, firmware and production, working under one roof so requirements, engineering, sourcing and calibration stayed connected

The relationship is built on full transparency, with Raw Stadia's demands and requirements taken to heart to keep the design and production flow smooth — all tied back to the specific needs of Raw Stadia's own clients. That rhythm is what has let Voxdale become Raw Stadia's one-stop shop for hardware and a trusted long-term partner.

How We Worked

How We Worked

The Hardest Challenge — and How We Solved It

The challenge. Delivering a complete, reliable hardware range on tight and changing budgets against shifting client and market demands, while managing the full end-to-end complexity and a large volume of design and production data.

Why it was difficult. Requirements and budgets kept moving, and the work spanned many disciplines at once — mechanical, electronics, firmware, manufacturing, sourcing, calibration and logistics — across both client and supplier sides. Quality and reliability could not slip even as constraints changed.

What would not work. Engineering each product design independently would have been too slow and too expensive on tight budgets, and would have multiplied the data and logistics burden across the range.

What we changed:

  1. A modular electronics design. Voxdale built the electronics as a modular setup that could be reused across the different product designs — reducing cost and effort per variant and keeping the range coherent.

  2. One multidisciplinary team, end to end. A single team managed the whole chain — client side and supplier side — so quality and reliability were owned in one place.

  3. Disciplined data and logistics management. BOMs, lead times, suppliers, CAD, drawings, order lists, budgets and capacity planning were managed from both design and production perspectives, covering standard and made-to-order parts, QA and calibration.
